Back on the bike, moving forward with a new version of my online course "Tools for Creating in the 4th Dimension"
For those of you who who are aware of my work, and those who may have taken my earlier courses, you may have been wondering where I disappeared to for a while. 2016/17 was a challenging time for me, I refer to it as my lost year. I had a serious bicycle accident followed by surgery and it took me a while to get back into my stride and back on my bike (which I am riding again).
Well, in that time, the developments in technologies like AR/VR/MR (or the umbrella term of XR) and others like Light Field Technology, have taken a big leap. So much material emerging daily, so many new blogs to listen to, so many conferences to potentially attend, it’s overwhelming to face the tide of information that is surging our way. For a while there I was questioning whether it might even be possible to distill that material into my online classes, especially in the format I had been working with which requires a great deal of time to prepare. I’ve also realized that for many people, including myself, it is helpful to listen to podcasts while at the gym or doing other chores that are of a more mechanical nature. I did a lot of this as I was rehabbing my shoulder and my knee.
So, I’m back, I have an updated version of my course “Tools for Creating in the 4th Dimension” which is launching registration on February 12th, 2018, and classes begin on February 24th, 2018. I’ve changed the format of the classes somewhat to make it possible for me to keep bringing you the very latest information about these technologies but in a way that I can frequently update easily.
So first of all, I am now offering 6 live online sessions, one per week for approximately 2 hours plus 3 sections of the course in the earlier format. Those sections are foundational in nature and haven’t changed much. However, they are essential for your understanding of the newer technologies that are bursting forth all over the place. The live classes will be used for the latest media that are changing fast and will be recorded and uploaded to the course website the day after the class so you can view them at your leisure. I usually have students from around the world in many different time zones so this can be particularly helpful for those in Asia, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. I will be using ZOOM for our sessions which will allow me to have a large number of you online with me, to screen share Keynote presentations, videos and white board if needed. You will be able to ask questions directly and the screen automatically puts the person speaking front and center. You end up with a nicely edited recording.
With each live session you will have access to supplemental material online that will give you links to many websites, Utubes and Vimeos as well as links to a range of relevant podcasts and content from many artists working in each of these fields. The material will take you much deeper than I can in the time allotted for the class sessions and it will be organized so that you can focus on the areas you are most interested in. Time is short for all of us and I hope that this new format will help you to find your way through the mass of material that is available out there to the content you are deeply interested in. I will also provide links to pdf’s of white paper’s, professional surveys and lists of relevant conferences that you might want to attend, and of course many links to 360, VR, AR content by artists and filmmakers.
So, I invite you to check it out, take a look at my website, www.artinthe5thdimension.com and sign up for my mailing list or go directly to the sign up for the course where you can enroll. I will be sending out emails in a couple of days about the FREE online session I will be offering on February 17th, 2018 and I hope that I will see some of you there. I will be taking a journey through some of the latest technological developments that we will be studying in greater depth during the course and will be happy to answer any of your questions.
One more thing - in order to maintain a flow of updated information about these technologies after you finish this course I am planning to offer a bimonthly (maybe monthly later) seminar just for you and other future students.
Watch out for future blog posts with more details.
